A meeting was held in approximately 1885 to resolve the colours of the Union be chocolate coloured jerseys with monogram TRFU and a representation of Mt Egmont on the breast with white knickers. These were supposed to be worn for the first time in the match against Auckland, but only eleven were sent, so that four players played in the old colours, amber and black. The new colours drew unfavourable comment at the time. In 1892 colours were changed and amber and black jerseys and caps and navy blue knickers were registered. This has evolved over the years to the wearing of white shorts, which have now been replaced by black shorts.
