Taranaki Steelformers Central Roofing Club Rugby Finals are at Yarrow Stadium on 24th July. To view the draw click here. Taranaki Club Rugby is the foundation for the game in the province. In 2010 there will be 16 active clubs fielding teams in the senior competition. Currently we have a player base of just over 5,500 players in the province with a population of around 100,000 people. While our player base is small in comparison to other provinces the quality of talent and the support from clubs is immense. There are three levels of participation: Senior (afternoon Grade), Secondary School and Junior (morning grade). In the senior grade there are 4 grade – Senior A, Senior B, Senior 3rds and Under 20. The Senior A and B Competition have 10 teams in each grade with the senior 3rds and Under 20 grade numbers dependant on entries received from year to year. The two top secondary school and 1st XV teams also compete in the club U20 competition. Secondary school rugby has grades from premier to second as well as on Under 15 section and one weight restricted grade. The Secondary School girls have an open competition played on Sundays. The 2009 Senior A and B competition consisted of two full rounds followed by semi finals and finals. The 2010 competition structure has been changed to reflect the recommendations in the Community Rugby Review completed at the end of 2009 season. The reviews focus was on strengthening competition amongst clubs by instigating a promotion/relegation format. The 2010 season will kick off on the 27th March with club finals taking place at Yarrow Stadium on the 24th July. A confirmed draw will be out in mid February and posted here on the Club Rugby Website. Other initiatives that are being worked through by the union include promoting a new competition to target school leavers as well as the consideration of night and midweek rugby. The TRFU are working hard to ensure Club Rugby remains a vital nursery for identifying and developing talent in the province as well as making it fun and accessible for all. The Union is extremely grateful to the vast number of volunteers who every Saturday in all sorts of weather continues to allow the game to be played and enjoyed throughout the province. Under 18 Teams The TRFU are encouraging clubs or districts to form composite teams of young players under the age of 18years to play in the secondary schools competition. If you wish to enter a team or find out more about this competition please contact Derek Dingle at the Union offices by the 25th March 2010.
